As the season ends, all ranks are reset before the start of a new season which means players lose their current ranks and become unranked again. Players must complete 10 Placement Matches again in order to get to a ranked tier. For long time League of Legends players, their ratings from the previous season and the pre-season are accounted along with the first 10 Placement Matches that all players must complete. However, for new players of League of Legends, only the 10 Placement Matches are accounted. Once the 10 Placement Matches are completed, players are now given their starting rank for the new season. Platinum I is the maximum tier a player can reach after completing the 10 Placement Matches but that also means every player has to do his or her best in these 10 Placement Matches if they want to play competitively.

The thing is, since all players are unranked, there is a high possibility of competing against seasoned players because they are mixed alongside new players which makes it difficult for new players to advance. However, it can be the other way around. So, the best thing to do is play with your best during the first Placement Matches and get a good tier.
